Jane Bown

I have used the photographer Jane Bown as a point of research many times before, for my personal work and for my college work when I was working towards my A Level. Her work is influential to me in terms of black and white portraits, and I have been inspired by two of her images the most.

This image of David Hockey strikes me as one of the photographs that represents her style more than some of her other work. David Hockey, an artist and photographer, is captured by Jane Bown, a fellow photographer, in a high fashion-esque look. The black and white nature of the photographs was down to the film and camera she shot on, but it adds to the depth of detail and shadows within the photograph.

This is one of the iconic images that Jane Bown produced, and one I instantly recognise in photographic books and journals. The depth of shadows beneath the aged skin of the male adds to the depth and seriousness of the photograph. I want to experiment with black and white photographs, to see if I can add depth to my studio images, like the two of the male subjects shown here.
